Global lipid specialists meet to discuss diagnosis of FH

A global group of lipid specialists invited by the International FH Foundation, chaired by Professor Gerald Watts from Perth in Australia, has come together to address the lack of formulated and result driven diagnosis of FH. FH (familial hypercholesterolaemia) is a dominantly inherited disorder present from birth that markedly elevates plasma cholesterol and causes premature coronary heart disease. There are at least 20 million people with FH worldwide, but the majority remain undetected and current treatment is suboptimal.

With the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO) having agreed to take concerted action to reduce mortality from non-communicable diseases by 25% by 2025, the World Heart Federation is leading a Global Task Force on CVD Prevention together with the European Society of Cardiology, European Heart Network, American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology to advocate for lifestyle and risk factor targets.
